Looking directly west from Western Summit has the city of North Adams taking center stage. With excellent eyesight, a view of steeples, spires, tall chimneys, and the westward Mohawk Trail can be seen. Beyond sight, clenched between the valley’s distant grasp, is the gem of the northern Berkshires from whence the journey began—Williamstown.

rrom Western Summit, it becomes apparent that the old trail transverses parts ot three states—Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts. It mapped the walkway of the Five Nations of the Iroquois Federation and is now named after the Mohawks, considered to be the strongest of that federation. It is one of the oldest byways on the continent.
